The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has charged Hunter Byrnes with more than 100 offenses.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An arrest inside a Jefferson County courthouse Thursday afternoon has now expanded into a federal investigation, according to officials.

Hunter Byrnes was taken into custody Thursday afternoon and charged with 124 counts of first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

A spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said Byrnes was arrested while appearing in court for an unrelated case.

According to the arrest citation, Byrnes removed a large amount of cash from his pocket while placing his belongings into a bag for processing inside the courthouse.

The citation stated that a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy suspected much of the money was counterfeit. The deputy later determined Byrnes had $300 in legitimate currency and $9,200 in counterfeit bills.

Officials said the fake bills were missing micro-printing, security fibers, and other standard safety features.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that Byrnes’ case has been escalated into a federal investigation led by the U.S. Secret Service.

Byrnes is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Friday at 9 a.m.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is expected to hold a press conference regarding Byrnes’ arrest on Friday at 3 p.m.
