The father of an Alabama woman accused of causing the high-speed crash that killed her 7-year-old son is speaking out in her defense after a court hearing.
Delyshia Molette, 34, appeared in a Mobile County courtroom on Tuesday, a little over a month after she was charged with manslaughter. Molette was arrested after a Nov. 4 crash and learned during her bond hearing that her 7-year-old son had died. Her 11-year-old son was also injured.
More details about the events leading up to the crash were revealed during the hearing. WKRG, along with Molette’s father, Douglas Molette, was present in the courtroom.
According to prosecutors, on Nov. 5, Molette tried to shoplift from a Publix grocery store in Semmes, Alabama, taking a package of hamburger meat and several dog toys. When confronted by employees, she allegedly threatened them with a weapon.
Police responded, and Molette allegedly assaulted an officer by attempting to gouge his eyes with her fingers and biting his finger. As officers tried to detain her, she reportedly escaped on foot. A search was conducted and later called off around 9 p.m.
Later, when police located her at home, Molette got into her Infiniti SUV with her two sons and planned to drive to Georgia, authorities said. She allegedly intended to cross state lines to prevent Alabama authorities from taking her children.
Police pursued her vehicle until they realized children were inside. During testimony at a November hearing, officers said Molette reached speeds up to 90 mph before crashing. It was during that earlier hearing that Molette learned her 7-year-old had died, shouting, “Did you say he died? My 7-year-old died?”
Douglas Molette told WKRG, “When you walk into a store and someone follows you, yes, for some people, anxiety kicks in. I feel that whether it was intentional or not, she went from 1 to 100 based on our previous issues.”
He added, “My family has a history of anxiety issues. When we get frustrated, we can go from 1 to 100 real quick. I know that sometimes when things get too much for her, she goes from 1 to 100 as well.” He said he does not believe his daughter’s actions were intentional and called the charges against her “excessive.”
Delyshia Molette is charged with manslaughter, resisting arrest, attempting to elude, robbery, and assault.
