The Kentucky Public Service Commission is holding three public meetings to discuss a proposed rate increase for Kentucky Power.
PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) – The Kentucky Public Service Commission is hosting a series of public meetings this winter to hear from people affected by Kentucky Power’s proposed rate hike.
Kentucky Power filed for the increase earlier this year, requesting an adjustment that would raise residential rates by more than 14% and increase commercial rates between 13% and 15%.
“There’s no doubt the cost of providing electricity to homes and businesses has become more expensive across our nation, but especially in Eastern Kentucky. The loss of population and industry here has created real challenges, pushing costs even higher,” Kentucky Power said in a news release.
“When we make decisions about investments, we must balance those investments with keeping costs as low as possible. To continue making investments and providing the level of service all customers deserve, regulated utilities apply with the Public Service Commission to have rates reviewed and adjusted.”
As part of the case, the PSC is holding three meetings to gather customer feedback.
“The application requests authorization to increase Kentucky Power’s electric base rate total revenue by $95,558,248. Residential customers would see an average monthly energy bill increase of $27.30, raising the average bill to $210.67 from $183.37. This represents an increase of approximately 14.62%,” the PSC said in a news release.
The first meeting will be held in Pikeville on Thursday, November 20, at 5 p.m. at the Pike County Public Library, located at 126 Lee Avenue.
The next meeting is scheduled for December 18 at the Perry County Courthouse, 481 Main Street. The third public comment hearing is set for January 8 at the Ashland Transportation Center, 99 15th Street. Both meetings will begin at 5 p.m.
For those unable to attend in person, comments can be submitted online, emailed to [email protected], or mailed to 211 Sower Boulevard, Frankfort, KY 40601.
According to the PSC, all comments must include the commenter’s name, address, and the case number.
