A New York woman was arrested after police said she drove drunk and hit an ambulance with her car.
Edith Cairo, 32, faces a charge of driving while intoxicated on Sunday after an early-morning crash in Bay Shore, New York. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, Cairo was driving her 2017 Honda Accord at 2:15 a.m. when she struck an ambulance as members of the Islip Fire Department loaded an injured patient into the back. Police said a second ambulance had to be called to the scene.
Local news station News 12 Long Island reported that the injured patient, a 26-year-old man, was on a gurney when Cairo allegedly hit the ambulance, which was parked on Bay Shore’s Main Street. The impact sent the gurney flying out of the back of the ambulance and knocked the patient to the ground. He suffered additional injuries, though none were life-threatening. No one else was hurt.
Police said the ambulance’s emergency lights were on when the crash happened.
The second ambulance took the patient to the hospital for treatment.
Police said Cairo was allegedly intoxicated, and officers arrested her at the scene without incident. They booked her into Suffolk County’s Third Precinct, where she spent the rest of the morning.
Cairo was due to appear in court for her arraignment on Sunday, police said.
