A California man allegedly killed his wife and burned her body, then told police that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had taken her into custody while she checked the mail.
Gurinder Gill, 28, stands accused of murder in the death of his 30-year-old wife, Jasmine Gill.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said Jasmine Gill was last seen on Sept. 30 near her home in the area of Headstock St. and Allegretto Way in Sacramento. Her cousin reported her missing on Oct. 4.
The suspect claimed ICE agents grabbed her as she walked outside in white, polka dot pajamas to get the mail. But ICE officials told detectives they had no operations in the area when the victim supposedly vanished.
Investigators also found “several inconsistencies” in Gurinder Gill’s account of his wife’s disappearance. They also learned that the Gills were “engaged in an ongoing divorce and child custody dispute.”
On Oct. 9, deputies announced her disappearance on social media. They later updated the post to say that “new information” led them to believe she was “at-risk.”
But Jasmine Gill was already dead.
On Oct. 1, officials in El Dorado County recovered a burned human body. Authorities later identified the remains as Jasmine Gill’s. They have not said how the victim died or where in El Dorado County they found the body.
Detectives executed two search warrants at homes “associated” with Gurinder Gill, though they did not say what turned up in those searches.
Authorities took the suspect into custody on Wednesday after charging him with his wife’s murder. He remains in the Sacramento County Jail without bond. His next court date is not listed.
