A former Mississippi alderman and his cousin, a former public works director, were taken into custody for allegedly exploiting city funds to build a private residential sewer line.
Mississippi State Auditor Shad White has announced the arrests of former Guntown Alderman William Daniel Davis and former Public Works Director Robert Lee Davis. Following an auditing inquiry, both men face charges of fraud or embezzlement in public office.
According to state investigative records, during October and November 2024, the pair conspired to defraud the town by invoicing the city $9,950 for sewage line installation at William Daniel Davis’ private residence.
“Our team at the state auditor’s office has zero tolerance for those who think it is acceptable to steal taxpayer dollars,” Auditor White said in a statement. “We will continue to do everything in our power to find individuals who think they can get away with taking money from the taxpayers of Mississippi.”
If convicted, both offenders may face up to ten years in state jail and thousands of dollars in fines.
