A father faces arrest after security cameras captured him allegedly throwing his two young daughters from a balcony. Tomokazu Miura, 25, was taken into custody in Kakamigahara City, Japan, in the early hours of Saturday, Sept. 26, on suspicion of attempted murder. Authorities allege he threw the girls, ages 4 and 1, from the balcony of his sixth-floor apartment, according to multiple Japanese outlets, including Japan Today, Nagoya TV News, and CBC Television News from Japan.
The incident unfolded around 4:20 a.m. local time at the apartment in Japan’s Gifu Prefecture, where the father and part-time worker resided with his wife and two daughters. This occurred several hours after his wife contacted emergency services, according to the outlets.
At 11:30 p.m. the previous night, Friday, Sept. 25, Miura’s wife called police and reported that he had grabbed her arm during an argument, the outlets stated.
Officers responded to the apartment and spoke with Miura’s wife outside the unit. Miura allegedly refused to cooperate and locked himself inside, according to Japan Today and CBC Television News.
Reports indicate he threw his young daughters from the balcony as police prepared to enter the apartment, the outlets confirmed.
The girls survived the six-story fall after landing on mats placed below. CBC Television News reported that a fire department supplied the mats, while Japan Today stated that police had positioned them beneath the Kakamigahara City apartment building in anticipation of a potential emergency.
Both the 1-year-old and 4-year-old received hospital treatment. They remained conscious during transport, and authorities believe their injuries are non-life-threatening, according to the outlets.
Nearby security cameras recorded the moment the girls fell from the balcony. Footage shared by CBC Television News and Nagoya TV News displays two blurry objects plunging from the balcony.
Authorities arrested Miura following the incident. He reportedly remained silent during questioning, according to the outlets.
A nearby resident who claims to have witnessed police take Miura away said the father stated that “he intended to die with them,” according to Nagoya TV News.
