A multi-agency law enforcement sweep over Labor Day weekend resulted in 27 DUI charges on Hillsborough County roadways and waterways, officials said.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office led the focused enforcement effort, which also included the Tampa Police Department, the Plant City Police Department, and the University of South Florida Police Department. The coordinated operation aimed to detect and remove intoxicated drivers during one of the most popular holiday travel weekends of the year.
Deputies and police performed 225 traffic stops over the weekend, issuing 210 warnings and 25 traffic penalties. In addition to the 27 DUI arrests, authorities made one other arrest.
Patrols also extended to local waterways, where deputies made 14 vessel stops and issued two tickets. There were no arrests for boating under the influence throughout the holiday operation.
“One less impaired driver on the road this Labor Day weekend meant one less possible tragedy for a family in our community,” Sheriff Chad Chronister stated. “This operation is a reminder of what’s possible when local law enforcement partners work together to send the message that impaired operation of any vehicle or vessel will not be tolerated in Hillsborough County.”
According to agency officials, DUI enforcement is a year-round priority, and drivers and boaters should prepare ahead by choosing a sober driver or using ride-sharing services.
