Indiana man allegedly shoots ex-girlfriend and kills her new boyfriend

An Indiana man was taken into custody for reportedly shooting his ex-girlfriend and killing her new boyfriend.

According to WXIN, Bertony Theagene, 50, was arrested after reportedly shooting his ex-girlfriend and then killing her new boyfriend.

According to the report, police went to an emergency call at an apartment complex on Bayside Drive in Indianapolis. When police arrived at the location, they reportedly discovered a woman shot in a bedroom, as well as a man who subsequently died in the hospital.

According to the report, while investigating the incident, an officer saw the suspect hiding behind steps near the shooting scene. Authorities stated that the man had a pistol and was attempting to shoot himself in the head, but the gun malfunctioned. According to WXIN, the man surrendered and allegedly admitted to shooting the victims.

According to court records examined by the site, Theagene allegedly acknowledged to the shooting but claimed it was an accident, telling police that “he brought the gun over with him because he didn’t know if the new boyfriend would be armed so he wanted to be able to protect himself.”

After the pistol malfunctioned, Theagene allegedly said, “He knew he was going to spend the rest of his life in prison and wanted to take the easy way out.”

According to WXIN, the female victim survived and informed detectives that the perpetrator opened fire after storming into her bedroom.

According to internet jail records, Theagene has been arrested and charged with the following:

  • Murder
  • Attempted murder

He is being held without bond at the Marion County Jail.
