The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau said that it was investigating a fatal dog attack that occurred on Friday, August 28, 2026, at a residence on Tapia Road in Santa Rosa.
According to officials, the Santa Rosa Police Department and New Mexico State Police (NMSP) officers arrived initially, but Investigations Bureau agents took over the investigation later.
Randy Wade, 73, was outside his home when NMSP reports two dogs belonging to James Campbell, 52, attacked him near a shed. Investigators decided that the dog assault was unprovoked.
According to the police investigation, Campbell and a lady were staying at Wade’s home when the woman observed the incident and requested Campbell’s assistance. According to officials, Campbell, who was inside the house, stepped outside and placed the dogs in an enclosure. According to New Mexico State Police, Campbell took Wade to the front porch, where he was subsequently found dead. The investigation includes the woman who observed the attack and contacted 911.
During an interview with investigators, Campbell admitted to knowing that his canines had previously been declared violent. Investigators also discovered that the dogs, both pitbull mix breeds, were supposedly involved in a previous attack and had recently been freed from an animal shelter.
Campbell is charged with Dangerous Dog (Death of a Person), a third-degree felony.
This is an ongoing investigation.
