Four suspects are in arrest after a Chicago Police Department surveillance camera operator observed them robbing people in Grant Park early Tuesday morning. Officers tracked the getaway car to Chinatown and apprehended the crew as they attempted to flee on the Red Line.
Patrol officers stopped an auto theft near Sedgwick and Evergreen in Old Town just after 3 a.m. The thieves rushed away, leaving the other vehicle behind, its doors open.
However, CPD continued to follow the getaway automobile electronically as it drove south on Lake Shore Drive. When the suspects arrived on Monroe Street at 3:15 a.m., they targeted a couple walking in the vicinity. A police spokesperson stated that the victims, a 21-year-old woman and a 28-year-old male, were in the 300 block of East Monroe Street when four individuals approached them. Police added that all four crew members showed firearms and seized belongings from the victims.
The CPD was watching the area via a nearby surveillance camera, and an officer ordered patrol units to the location. According to police radio recordings, those units began after the automobile but stopped when it joined the freeway. Police employed further techniques to trace down the vehicle and apprehend the crew after they abandoned the stolen gray Hyundai Sonata in a Chinatown parking lot. Officers then pursued all four on foot.
Police claimed they apprehended the team in the 100 block of West Cermak Road. At least one weapon was found on the Cermak-Chinatown Red Line station stairs.
Initially, the victims refused to sign complaint forms and refused to travel to Chinatown to identify the perpetrators. Eventually, they consented to go and confirmed that police had arrested the correct people. Charges were pending as of Tuesday morning, officials said.
