Two Manassas men were among 1,328 people apprehended in Virginia and Maryland during a recent two-week immigration enforcement operation led by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security.
The arrests, known as “Operation Safe Community – Washington, D.C.,” occurred between August 1 and August 14, and targeted illegal immigrants with a history of significant criminal charges, according to a DHS news release.
According to DHS, the arrests included four men living in Northern Virginia:
German Mejia-Baires of Manassas, an alleged MS-13 gang member, has convictions for driving while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license, and re-entry, as well as arrests for felony malicious wounding and stealing.
Julio Hector Carranza-Rojano, of Manassas, has previous convictions for sexual battery, driving while intoxicated, and hit-and-run.
Angel Gabriel Ortiz-Hernandez of Alexandria is wanted for rape of a mentally incompetent victim and two charges of aggravated sexual battery of an impaired person.
Rowan Andrew Brown of Alexandria has convictions for identity theft, kidnapping, and illegal re-entry, as well as an arrest for fraud.
The operation, which spanned both states and was supported by organizations such as the United States Marshals, resulted in 1,328 arrests, according to the news release.
According to federal officials, approximately 400 of those held have already been convicted or charged with crimes in the United States. Those arrested are still in federal detention pending removal proceedings.
