Police say a 15-year-old boy was shot Sunday afternoon while sitting near a sidewalk in the 1900 block of West Cermak Road on Chicago’s Lower West Side. Around 3:30 p.m., someone in a nearby car opened fire, striking the teenager before fleeing the area.
The boy was rushed to Stroger Hospital and was listed in good condition, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Detectives are investigating the shooting, but no suspect description or motive have been issued. According to MentalHealthFacilities.net, Stroger Hospital, formerly known as John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, runs a significant public Level 1 Trauma Center roughly 1.5 miles north of the shooting location and treats gunshot victims from Chicago’s West Side on a regular basis.
The 1900 block of West Cermak Road is in the Chicago Police Department’s 12th (Near West) District, with Area Three Detectives handling felony investigations throughout the Lower West Side and Pilsen, according to the department. In recent years, there have been occasional violent occurrences along the corridor. In July 2024, authorities detained a suspect during a traffic check on the same block. According to CWB Chicago, they discovered a loaded.38-caliber handgun that prosecutors believe was used in a shooting outside a neighboring migrant shelter.
Further back, the block was also the scene of an armed robbery in November 2023, when robbers took an ATM from a currency exchange during a one-hour crime rampage that claimed the lives of 12 people on the West Side, according to CBS News. During that spree, masked gunmen drove automobiles across the area. A 35-year-old man was shot and killed by an approaching group on West Cermak Road in Lawndale just over a week ago, as reported by Hoodline.
Sunday’s shooting fits with a larger pattern of youthful gun violence in Chicago this summer. A 15-year-old was fatally shot on West Jackson Boulevard on July 22, while non-fatal shootings hospitalized 15-year-olds in Englewood and Calumet Heights over the same time period, according to WTTW News. Several mid-summer investigations resulted in no immediate arrests, according to police.
The Lower West Side, Chicago’s designated Community Area 31, is a historic working-class immigrant neighborhood about three miles southwest of the Loop, bounded by the Chicago River and rail corridors, according to the IFF. The neighborhood, known as Pilsen, remains a predominantly Latino cultural hub, and it has received repeated Hoodline coverage of gun violence this year, including the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old by an SUV gunman in a Lower West Side parking lot, as well as community efforts described in Hoodline’s report on the family’s unsolved killing of Bibi.
Chicago had 416 homicides in 2025, a 29% decrease from the previous year and the city’s lowest single-year number since 1965, according to NORC at the University of Chicago. However, the situation in 2026 is more complicated: data from the Council on Criminal Justice showed that robberies plummeted 28% and carjackings fell 27% in the first half of the year, while gun assaults rose 1% and killings increased 3% compared to mid-2025.
The contrast between decreased property crime and ongoing gun violence is most visible among Chicago’s young people. According to Lurie Children’s Hospital, firearms continue to be the biggest cause of death for children in Illinois, killing an average of 183 young people each year, and almost 60% of the city’s youngest citizens live in communities that account for 91% of Chicago’s killings. According to the same study, 12% of Chicago parents said their children knew a shooting victim.
Community violence intervention initiatives have shown some measurable impact in addressing this exposure. The University of Chicago Crime Lab discovered that programs like Choose to Change, which combines trauma therapy with mentoring for at-risk kids, reduced violent crime arrests by 48%. Outreach organizations in Chicago use such strategies to reach out to young people outside of regular institutional settings.
