Deputies in George County said that an Alabama woman had been detained for property damage, setting fire to items, and animal cruelty.
Deputies responded to the Basin neighborhood on August 14, 2026, following a call regarding damaged property. The suspect was identified as Maria Lewis, 55, of Mobile.
Investigators discovered that Lewis had been residing at the Mississippi residence and was about to be evicted by the homeowner. During the incident, deputies said Lewis damaged several thousand dollars’ worth of property and set fire to other objects owned by the homeowner.
During the inquiry, investigators said Lewis allegedly placed her tiny dog in a carrier and abandoned it in the surrounding woods without food or water. The dog was discovered by a neighbor the next day.
Lewis was arrested and charged with felony malicious mischief and felony arson, third degree. She was then charged with simple animal cruelty (a misdemeanor).
Lewis was given a bond of $45,000 during her court appearance.
