A Washington, D.C. man has been sentenced to 85 years in prison for his role in a mass shooting at Morgan State University’s 2023 homecoming festivities.
In May, Marquis Brown, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident, was convicted of numerous counts of attempted murder in connection with the five-person killing.
Brown was one of two persons arrested and charged in this crime. The other suspect, Jovan Terrell Williams, is serving a federal prison sentence in Washington, D.C. for unrelated offenses. He is scheduled to appear in court again on August 31.Marquis Brown will now spend the vast bulk of his life in prison,” Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates stated. “This 85-year sentence ensures that he is held accountable for the devastation he caused and sends an unmistakable message about how seriously we will respond to those who recklessly endanger the lives of our young people.”
Around 9:30 p.m. on October 3, 2023, police reported gunfire near the Thurgood Marshall Apartment Complex dorms as students gathered to celebrate homecoming.
Police reported that five persons were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Bates stated, “The defendant’s choice to open fire on a packed homecoming celebration demonstrated a shocking contempt for that responsibility, as well as the lives and prospects of everyone around him. No student or family should ever have to worry for their lives while celebrating their university and community. Conduct this irresponsible and hazardous necessitates harsh penalties, not just to hold this defendant accountable, but also to convey a clear message that our children, their safety, and their futures are critical to all of us.”
