Police say five people are in custody after employees were “restrained” and $2 million worth of merchandise was stolen during a jewelry store robbery on Indianapolis’ southeast side.
Just before 1 p.m. Monday, police were dispatched to the 4900 block of S. Emerson Avenue in response to a report of an ongoing business robbery. The address for King Jewelers is near the intersection of Emerson and E. Thompson Road on the city’s southeast side.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers have since confirmed to FOX59/CBS4 that two people were “restrained” with duct tape and zip ties during the robbery. The robbery left no one hurt, but employees reported that the perpetrators were equipped with weapons.
At gunpoint, the suspects allegedly stole approximately $2,000,000 in precious metals, cash, and jewelry from the business before escaping in a car.
According to IMPD, detectives identified five suspects in the crime, as well as the vehicle in which they fled. Indiana State Police and local agencies in Boone County quickly located the vehicle on I-65 near Lebanon.
Officials claimed ISP troopers attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect car escaped, resulting in a pursuit. After a PIT maneuver by police, the pursuit ended after crossing into Clinton County.
All five suspects apparently exited the damaged automobile and began rushing away on foot. Finally, all five were caught. Numerous police drones, K9s, and the ISP helicopter all helped in the search,” the IMPD said in a news statement. “The suspect vehicle and several bags of evidence were recovered.”
The proprietors of King Jewelers sent the following statement to FOX59/CBS4:
“Following the recent incident at King Jewelers, our biggest priority is the safety and well-being of our customers, employees, and community. We are extremely grateful that everyone is safe. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and have taken additional security precautions to further strengthen the safety of our business. we are not able to discuss specific details at this time. We are incredibly thankful for the outpouring of support and concern from our customers and the Indianapolis community.”
