The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating a weekend officer-involved shooting that killed a Tennessee man.
Around 10 p.m. on Saturday, Byhalia Police officers responded to a call near Church Station Parkway from a woman reporting that someone had been shot inside a home. When authorities arrived, they successfully rescued three persons, including a child, from the home.
Investigators discovered that 47-year-old Russell Kelly Jr. of Memphis had reportedly shot and killed a woman on the premises. Kelly opened fire on the responding policemen shortly after they arrived, leading them to call in the DeSoto County SWAT team for help.
The incident turned into a nearly 10-hour standoff when Kelly barricaded himself inside and fired repeatedly at police. The confrontation ended when an officer shot and killed Kelly.
The incident resulted in no major bodily injuries to law enforcement personnel.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is currently heading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, as is customary in the state. Authorities have yet to reveal the identity of the woman who was killed inside the home prior to the standoff.
