A Florida mother is facing significant charges after police pulled her over for a traffic stop. According to WPLG Local 10, a 25-year-old woman was detained when police noticed her weaving in and out of traffic in Miramar. What initially seemed like a probable DUI quickly changed when officers saw the contents of her front seat.
According to the investigation, the mother drove carelessly with an unsecured infant in the passenger seat. Police said they also noticed the smell of alcohol on the driver, Tylasia Bennett.
Bennett now faces several charges stemming from the traffic stop, including child neglect without substantial bodily harm. The incident occurred on Friday, and it appears that the new mother is still behind bars.
Around 11:30 p.m. local time, officers were dispatched to Miramar Parkway and 184th Avenue after drivers reported seeing a silver Ford driving recklessly, according to WPLG Local 10. It appears that the Ford nearly crashed with an 18-wheeler during the incident, and drivers were concerned about what was occurring.
When authorities arrived, they discovered the automobile parked with the engine still running and a 2-month-old baby sitting in the passenger seat. According to the police report seen by the publication, the child was “not properly restrained or secured in a child safety seat.”
When asked about the infant’s lack of a car seat, Bennett allegedly told authorities that “the baby had been crying, so she moved it to the front seat. ” When asked why the baby was also coated in food, the driver explained that she had unintentionally dropped food on the infant.
Officers said that Bennett failed the field sobriety tests after being ordered to exit the vehicle and was arrested.
The new mother is in serious legal trouble as a result of her arrest, having been charged with child neglect without great bodily harm, driving under the influence, and driving with a suspended license. According to Online Sunshine, the 2025 Florida Statutes for these crimes can result in severe punishments.
For first-time offenders, driving under the influence can result in a $500 to $1,000 fine and up to 6 months in prison. However, if a youngster is in the automobile at the time of the event, the penalties may be increased.
Add in the child endangerment accusation, which according to the Hornsby Law Firm can result in a $5,000 fine and up to five years in jail if convicted, and Bennett could be in serious trouble.
Of course, Bennett should be presumed innocent unless proven guilty. And, without any additional information regarding her hearing or if she had the opportunity to plead guilty or not guilty to these offenses before a judge, no one knows for certain what happened during that Friday night journey.
