A Wildwood man was taken into custody on drug charges after being stopped on a bicycle while carrying fentanyl and burnt pipes.
An officer on patrol noticed 65-year-old Freddie Lee Labon riding his bicycle without a rear light on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue at 9:40 p.m. on Friday, according to a Wildwood Police Department arrest report.
Before activating his emergency lights for a traffic stop, the officer noticed Labon throwing a drink from his bicycle. He then stopped Labon at the intersection of South Main and Huey streets. According to the complaint, the tossed beverage was an open can of Coors Light beer that was still chilly to the touch.
The officer then asked Labon if he had anything unlawful on his person, to which he replied that he did not. He appeared uneasy, avoiding eye contact and occasionally peering inside a crate put on the bicycle. This behaviour prompted the officer to send his K-9 companion to search for narcotics, according to the report.
The K-9 focused on the bicycle’s crate, and the officer started searching its contents. He discovered a black pouch with two clear charred pipes and a little black container containing several white rock-like materials. When asked what it was, Lebon said, “Crack,” according to the report.
The substance tested positive for fentanyl and weighed 1.1 grams, according to the report.
Labon was detained on allegations of fentanyl possession and drug equipment use. The Georgia native was booked into the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting a $2,000 bond.
