A 33-year-old Chicago woman who worked at Cook County Jail’s medical center is facing a felony charge for allegedly smuggling a cellphone into the jail and slipping it with gauze to covering a prisoner’s injuries.
Dominique Smith-Montgomery, a Cermak Health Services employee at the jail hospital, was arrested on July 23 following an investigation by the Cook County Sheriff’s Department of Investigations and Intelligence, the sheriff’s office announced Monday.
Investigators launched an investigation after obtaining information that Smith-Montgomery may have been having an inappropriate interaction with a detainee. They quickly discovered that the couple had exchanged hundreds of phone calls and that Smith-Montgomery had brought a cellphone into the jail and delivered it to the man, according to the sheriff’s office. Investigators inspected the man’s cell phone and discovered a phone and other contraband, according to officials.
Smith-Montgomery allegedly told authorities that she had hidden the cellphone in her underpants before entering the jail and then placed it into gauze covering the man’s wound. The sheriff’s office stated that she did it because she “liked him.”
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office accused Smith-Montgomery of introducing contraband into a correctional facility. She is presently free, pending trial. The sheriff’s office said the investigation into the man who received the cellphone is still ongoing.
