Two suspects have been taken into custody and charged with murder after authorities linked them to the death of a homeless man whose body was found inside a garbage bin at a construction site in downtown Augusta.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office stated Friday that 17-year-old Lamar Rodriquez Witt and 19-year-old Keshaun Walters were apprehended after family members recognized them in a sheriff’s office BOLO that contained surveillance images released earlier that day.
A family member brought both individuals to the sheriff’s office, where investigators interviewed them before making the arrests.
Both suspects were booked at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on murder charges.
The investigation began at about 5:06 a.m. Richmond County officers arrived at the 600 block of Broad Street on Thursday, July 30, following a report of a broken window at the former Ramada Plaza Hotel’s remodeling site.
While investigating, deputies discovered the body of 65-year-old Nathan Lewis Jr. inside a trash can on the property.
According to investigators, Lewis, who was homeless, suffered severe cuts. His death was declared a homicide, and police described it as an “extremely brutal attack.”
An autopsy is underway.
The sheriff’s office stated that Lewis’ family had been notified of the arrests.
