A man is facing many charges after police say he attacked an officer who was attempting to arrest him on outstanding warrants after discovering him using fentanyl.
According to court records, officers were on bike patrol in Northwest Portland on Saturday, July 25, when they spotted several men allegedly using narcotics against a structure in the 100 block of Northwest 20th Place.
One of the men, later identified as Gregory Ward Bass Jr., 34, originally provided officers a bogus identity due to outstanding charges before identifying himself.
Prosecutors allege that when officers attempted to arrest Bass, he took a metal candlestick holder, flung it at them, and fled.
Another witness told police Bass repeatedly hit an officer in the head until two spectators assisted officers in wrestling him to the ground.
According to court filings, Bass defecated in the back of a patrol cruiser while being driven to jail.
He was charged on Monday with escape, attacking a public safety officer, unauthorized use of a firearm, resisting arrest, providing false information to a police officer, and possessing fentanyl.
According to court documents, Bass was sentenced to three years probation in 2017 after pleading guilty to assaulting a public safety officer and third-degree assault.
He was penalized in 2019 for two minor convictions. After pleading no contest to criminal mischief in 2025, he received six months probation and two days in jail.
According to court records, Bass has pending felony proceedings in Washington and Multnomah counties for identity theft and harassment.
