A Florida man was taken into custody Monday inside an IHOP restaurant in Orlando after allegedly stabbing a rideshare driver.
According to the Orlando Police Department, Jovaughn Nathan Matthie allegedly attacked the driver because he “refused to provide a ride without a request through the rideshare app”.
Police have not revealed the driver’s condition. Matthie is charged with attempted murder.
Following the attack, Matthie escaped to a neighbouring IHOP in northeastern Orlando, according to authorities.
The agency shared body camera footage that showed many officers surrounding Matthie while he sat and drank a hot beverage.
According to the camera, the restaurant looked to be empty, with no other patrons present.
Officers continually instructed Matthie to get on the ground, lie on his stomach, and put his hands behind his back.
When Matthie was slow to put his hands behind his back, an officer with a police dog warned him that he would be “dog-bit” if he did not comply.
According to the footage, after being detained, two cops helped him to his feet before realising he had a “long” thing in his pocket.
Another officer cautiously delved inside Matthie’s sweatpants and discovered what he characterised as a knife wrapped in white fabric.
The Orlando Police Department has not provided any additional information, citing a need to “protect the integrity of the investigation”.
