An Illinois man was apprehended in Knox County after Indiana State Police say he failed to move over for a stopped trooper and displayed signs of impairment during a traffic stop.
Police say the stop occurred Sunday evening on northbound U.S. 41 near Camp Arthur Road, where the ISP trooper was parked on the right shoulder with emergency lights turned on. According to ISP, a blue SUV approached in the right lane and passed the trooper’s vehicle without changing lanes, despite the fact that there were no other vehicles to prevent the driver from shifting over.
The trooper stopped the SUV and identified the driver as 58-year-old Anthony L. Mason from Illinois. According to police, Hurley observed signs of impairment during the stop and obtained a search warrant as part of the investigation.
Mason was detained and booked into the Knox County Jail on the following preliminary charges, according to police:
Indiana State Police reported that the traffic stop occurred during the 6-State Trooper Project’s Move Over enforcement period, which runs from July 19 to July 25 and includes agencies from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
ISP reminds drivers that Indiana’s Move Over legislation requires cars approaching a halted emergency vehicle with lights on to change lanes when it is safe. If vehicles are unable to safely change lanes, they must reduce their speed to at least 10 mph below the posted limit and proceed cautiously. The regulation also affects tow trucks, highway maintenance and utility vehicles with flashing lights, as well as disabled cars with warning lights.
