An Alexandria man is facing nearly 200 criminal charges after a months-long investigation into a serial theft operation targeting gym-goers across Northern Virginia.
Kumneger Ayalsew, 29, was arrested on June 26 after police linked him to a series of vehicle break-ins and credit card frauds at fitness centers in Fairfax County, Falls Church, and the surrounding areas.
According to investigators, Ayalsew targeted unlocked vehicles parked outside local gyms, stealing wallets, cash, credit cards, and other personal goods dating back at least to April 2026.
Ayalsew then allegedly dashed to nearby retailers to purchase gift cards, frequently executing fraudulent transactions before victims realized their belongings had vanished.

Ayalsew was recently charged with 32 additional counts in Fairfax County alone. He is currently facing nearly 200 charges in connection with similar crimes committed in Fairfax County and Falls Church.
On July 14, Ayalsew was released on his own recognizance after facing Fairfax County charges. He is still detained at the Arlington County Detention Center on separate charges filed by the Falls Church Police Department.
