A man who was wanted for allegedly setting fire to a McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office substation in Dearing has been taken into custody.
On Thursday, McDuffie County deputies announced that Carter Martin Jarrard had been detained and was in police custody.
Jarrard was originally wanted for arson and second-degree burglary, according to the sheriff’s office.
Pat Morgan, special agent in charge of the GBI’s Thomson field office, reported smoke coming from the building at 5 a.m. Wednesday.
Morgan said it looks that a burglary occurred, and the culprit set fire to cover it up.
The substation is located near the middle of Dearing on Highway 278.
Morgan stated that a deputy had been working from the building as recently as Tuesday.
It is unclear what was stolen, but the facility has been boarded up.
