Suspect taken into custody in shooting death of North Augusta man

A 19-year-old has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of a North Augusta man, according to authorities.

Deputies in Aiken County said Jaquan Colbert was detained on Friday and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

He is now held at the Aiken County Jail.

His allegations come from the fatal shooting of 61-year-old Darryl J. McKinney.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office reports that the shooting occurred on April 16 in the 600 block of Hutchinson Drive.

North Augusta Department of Public Safety officers went to the site around 10:11 p.m. Deputies from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office came shortly thereafter.

McKinney was declared dead on the scene at 10:55 p.m., according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

The North Augusta Department of Public Safety, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office investigators, forensic units, and the Aiken County Coroner’s Office all responded to the incident.
