A 21-year-old man from Fabens has been apprehended in connection with a fatal hit-and-run on June 18 in Far East El Paso, which killed a 76-year-old man.
According to the El Paso Police Department, Abraham Sosa Castro has been identified as the suspect, and he was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of fleeing after crashing into a vehicle on Loop 375 (near Pellicano Drive) on June 18, killing the other driver, Manuel Olivas Contreras.
This comes after authorities solicited the public for assistance in discovering the suspect on June 20, just a few days after the tragedy occurred.
Contreras was first believed to have sustained non-life-threatening injuries the night of the crash; however, authorities eventually discovered that he died the next morning at a hospital.
Castro allegedly rear-ended Contreras’ 2019 Nissan Sentra while driving a 2023 Cadillac CT4 south on Loop 375 at high speed, then abandoned his vehicle and fled.
According to police records, Contreras’ death is the 22nd traffic fatalities in 2026, compared to 29 at the same period in 2025.
According to jail records, Castro was booked into El Paso County’s Downtown Jail on Wednesday and charged with a fatal collision.
According to jail records, Castro was still in custody on Wednesday afternoon, with a $500,000 bond.
Images from the crash were published on the prominent social media account @therealfitfamelpaso, which appear to show Castro at the scene before reportedly fleeing.
