A Wildwood man is facing a felony charge after reportedly striking another man in the head with a heavy tree branch, resulting in severe injuries that required the victim to be taken to a local trauma center.
At approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a battery report at a Bushnell residence. Upon arrival, they discovered a man victim with evident head damage. The victim was flown by helicopter to a nearby trauma facility for emergency medical treatment.
During the investigation, a witness reported a physical altercation in the front yard. The witness indicated that during the struggle, the suspect, 41-year-old Marvin “Juke” Rushing of Wildwood, struck the victim in the back of the head with a huge tree branch.
The homeowner gave law enforcement permission to search the house, stating that Rushing and another man were visiting and still inside. Uniformed deputies loudly proclaimed their arrival at the front door and directed the males to come outside with their hands raised.
While the second man cooperated and left the house, Rushing resisted. Deputies repeatedly warned him that if he did not surrender, he would be arrested for obstruction, but he continued to disobey the demands.
Deputies eventually entered the property with a key provided by the homeowner. They meticulously searched the house until they came across a bedroom on the south end. Inside, deputies discovered that the bed frame had been pulled away from the wall. They discovered Rushing attempting to conceal himself beneath several cushions and took him into jail without incident.
Rushing was arrested on felony charges of aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor resisting an officer without violence. Marvin Rushing is still being held without bond at Sumter County Detention Center.
