A pair of camp counselors were taken into custody in southwest Miami-Dade after allegedly assaulting a boy in their care, according to authorities.
Zaccheus Zamon Scott, 34, of Palmetto Bay, and Antoinette McKay, 50, of Cutler Bay, were arrested Wednesday on one count of child abuse with no grave bodily harm, according to Miami-Dade jail records.
According to arrest files, the alleged incident occurred on June 11 at St. Peters Missionary Baptist Church on Southwest 107th Avenue.
The victim, a 9-year-old boy, was at summer camp with his siblings playing football when he and one of them got into a physical argument, according to reports.
Both counselors interfered, and the youngster claimed Scott placed enormous orange cones over his head, making it impossible for him to breathe, according to reports.
According to the claims, McKay then seized him by the ankles, putting his back to the ground with his legs elevated while holding him down by the ankles on the seat of a chair.
While McKay was holding him down, he claimed Scott slapped him in the face and head many times.
The youngster had broken blood vessels in his eye, a scratch on his face, and swelling and bruising on his face before being treated and released from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
Scott and McKay were booked into jail and appeared before a judge on Thursday.
An attorney defending Scott and McKay told the judge that the boy’s father continued to bring him to the camp after the alleged assault, and that the father has a history of child abuse offenses.
The judge set the bonds at $1,500 each.
