2 men sentenced to up to 30 years in prison for deadly Dorchester shooting

Two Massachusetts men were sentenced to up to 30 years in prison for a deadly shooting in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood in 2023.

Dashan Crowder, 23, of Quincy, and Tyreese Robinson, 21, of Randolph, pleaded guilty to manslaughter, unlawful possession of a handgun, and six counts of armed assault with intent to murder, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.

Curtis Effee, 41, of Boston, was fatally shot on Geneva Avenue in the early hours of December 30, 2023. The next day, Crowder and Robinson were arrested and charged with murder.

A third person, 32-year-old Boston resident Patrick Harland, is also charged in the case.

Investigators say Harland had a verbal dispute with Effee before talking with Crowder, who he claimed was coming to the spot with a pistol. Crowder and Robinson came, and a violent struggle followed, with Harland apparently drawing a knife on Effee.

According to authorities, Crowder and Robinson then pulled out firearms and started fire on Effee, with a 10-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl close.

Effee was hit and died of his injuries.

According to authorities, Crowder and Robinson fled the area in a car and were apprehended the following day. Harland, who fled by foot, was apprehended on March 25, 2024.

On Tuesday, a judge in Suffolk Superior Court sentenced Crowder and Robinson to 18 to 20 years in jail for manslaughter and another seven to ten years for armed assault with intent to murder. A four to five-year sentence for the firearms offense will be served concurrently with the manslaughter sentence.

Harland’s trial is planned for August 10. The pleas today, as well as the upcoming prosecution of a third defendant, show that everything is being done to secure justice for Curtis Effee and his family, as well as to make it clear that this type of violence, which harms our neighborhoods and communities, will not be tolerated,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement.
