A missing 16-year-old girl has been identified as the body discovered in the Fox River in a northwest Chicago suburb over the weekend.
Destiny Neal of Elgin was discovered dead in the river north of the Kimball Street Bridge on Sunday afternoon, according to an Elgin police announcement issued Monday.
Neal had been reported missing just two days before.
A missing person poster indicates that she was last seen wandering in the 1200 block of Abbot Drive around 7 p.m. on June 19.
Police said an autopsy was performed on Monday, but toxicology samples were submitted to a national forensic lab for “extensive analysis.” The Kane County coroner and police department are currently investigating the cause and manner of death of the deceased.
“The Kane County Coroner, Dr. Monica Silva, and her staff extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Destiny Neal,” officials stated in a statement.
Her death is the latest in a series of deaths recorded in bodies of water in the Chicago area.
