CASE DETAILS

On June 18, about 10 p.m., Barberton police officers responded to an accident complaint near South Van Buren Avenue and Harold Avenue.

When officers arrived at the site, they discovered a vehicle that had collided with a FirstEnergy electric pole. Three males were discovered inside the vehicle.

One of the occupants, later identified as Benjamin Hutchinson, was declared dead on the spot. Hutchinson’s injuries were consistent with those from a car accident and a gunshot wound, according to police.

A day after the crash, the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office recognized Hutchinson and revealed that he died from a gunshot wound to the torso.

The remaining two occupants were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not revealed any details on the extent of their injuries.

The Barberton Police Department Detective Bureau is conducting the investigation, with help from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
