U.S. Marshals Arrested Columbus Man Wanted In Firearms Trafficking Case

U.S. marshals Arrested 24-year-old Theondrey Burrell on Thursday at a home in Columbus’ 700 block of Shakerton Lane, bringing a brief fugitive investigation to a close. Burrell, who was wanted on a federal conspiracy charge for weapons trafficking and was known to frequent the Cleveland region, was apprehended without incident by members of the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team, according to law enforcement reports.

Burrell was designated the US Marshals’ Fugitive of the Week on June 8 and was apprehended at the Shakerton Lane address on June 18. The U.S. Marshals and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives had been hunting for him in connection with a firearms trafficking investigation, and local task forces had joined in, according to Cleveland 19.

The arrest was made by the U.S. Marshals-led Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team, or SOFAST, who found Burrell at his Columbus home and arrested him without incident. According to previous press releases from the Marshals Service, SOFAST is a multi-agency fugitive task force that pulls together local police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and federal partners to track down and arrest wanted offenders throughout central and southern Ohio. According to the Marshals Service, these task forces routinely share leads, conduct surveillance, and coordinate arrests across jurisdictions to apprehend fugitives.

Recently, federal prosecutors and the ATF have made gun trafficking a top priority in Ohio, targeting sellers and networks that transport firearms between cities and counties. Following cooperative operations with the ATF and the Marshals Service, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Ohio prosecuted trafficking cases that resulted in substantial federal prison terms, indicating a continuous government drive to remove illegal guns from communities. US Department of Justice reports mention a previous case in the Cleveland area.

Officials have yet to produce charging documents or reveal where Burrell is being kept, and no other information about evidence in the case or any connected arrests is yet available. The arrest was initially reported by Cleveland 19, and the story will be updated as federal filings and jail information become available.
