2 bystanders injured during exchange of gunfire

A man and a woman were injured early Sunday morning after two other males opened fire on each other in the city’s Highland Square district, according to police.

Police say the 26-year-old male victim was in critical condition at a hospital. The 34-year-old woman’s wounds were not deemed to be life-threatening.

According to police, officers on a special assignment in Highland Square were attempting to break up a disagreement between two women just before 1:30 a.m. when bullets were fired from a parking lot about 50 yards away.

According to police, despite the presence of “multiple” officers nearby, the two men exchanged gunfire. Twenty shot casings were found at the location, but no arrests were made.

It’s unknown why the two men started shooting at each other.

“It’s troubling when an incident like this shooting occurs despite the visible presence of police officers nearby,” Police Chief Brian Harding said in a statement. “We remain optimistic that the patients will recover, and we are relieved that no officers or others were hurt.

“The reckless conduct of those responsible endangered many individuals. “Our detectives are working hard to identify the gunmen and hold them accountable.”
