Sunland Park woman faces charges after allegedly stabbing a man

According to court documents obtained by ABC-7, 31-year-old Sarai Ortiz is facing many counts following a confrontation in which she reportedly stabbed a man with a knife.

According to court filings, Sunland Park Police Department officers responded to the 100 block of Palma on June 1, 2026, after getting a complaint regarding a subject with wounds from a bladed object.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered an older guy on the ground with three stab wounds. According to court filings, the victim told police that Ortiz stabbed him, and he was sent to the University Medical Center of El Paso shortly after that.

Officers met with the 911 caller, who informed police that they had seen Ortiz outside the house and what she was wearing, heard the victim yelling for help, and called 911.

According to court filings, Ortiz informed authorities that she and the victim had been arguing since the night before the stabbing, which prompted law enforcement to respond. She then informed officers that she had been strangled by the victim and attempted to flee him during the confrontation, despite the fact that court documents show cops saw no injuries on Ortiz.

According to the records, Ortiz admitted to the officials that he stabbed the victim, stating, “I had to stab him.” Ortiz said she used a kitchen knife and threw it away in the house.

Ortiz is charged with three charges of aggravated battery on a household member (deadly weapon), one offense of attempting to commit a felony, namely murder, and one count of tampering with evidence (capital crime or first or second degree felony).

According to booking documents from the Dona Ana County Detention Center, she is being held without bond.
