The Saunders County Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect and victim in the homicide that occurred in Ashland on Thursday afternoon.
Robert Haswell Jr., 31, of Ashland, was arrested and placed into jail on charges of first-degree murder and criminal weapon usage.
The victim has been identified as Robert Haswell Sr., 67, of Ashland. He was shot at least once and pronounced dead on the spot, according to authorities.
At 4:34 p.m., authorities got a report of a shooting on the 1700 block of Dawes Street.
“After negotiating over the phone with the caller and suspect in the incident, the suspect came outside unarmed and was taken into custody by Ashland Police officers,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
Several residents expressed surprise at the sirens and police cars rushing through the neighborhood.
On Thursday evening, police declared the incident an emergency and asked people to keep away from the area, stating that there was no ongoing threat to public safety.
“I was shocked to my core. It does not happen here. This is a stunning community. It’s shocking to learn that this happened here. “I’m numb knowing it happened here,” said Jason, who lives just down the street.
Jason stated that while he and his family were homeless, this community welcomed him, helped him locate a place to stay, and provided items for his home.
He expressed sadness at seeing such a large police presence in an area where he has always felt safe.
