Two women are behind bars being accused of severely abusing two toddlers in northwest Harris County.
The girls’ aunt, who now has guardianship of both children, is speaking out and urging others to be vigilant and report any symptoms of child abuse.
Jamesha Wilson and her partner, Kevonnisha Jones, have been charged with child injury and significant physical and mental harm.
Both are in Harris County Jail.
The arrests occurred almost eight months after the three-year-old was discovered barely breathing.
KPRC 2 News spoke with Asherah Henderson, the girls’ aunt, about the night everything changed and what lies ahead for the two babies.
“My girls almost did not make it. “It’s hard,” Henderson added.
Henderson claims she got a call from a social worker one night in September. She taped the call on her cell phone when her 2-year-old niece’s small voice could be heard in the background, saying “I don’t know” when her aunt inquired, “What is this?”
“She was in the fetal position.” “There was a small bowl of chicken next to her, as if she were a stray animal,” Henderson explained. “She crawled to me once she saw me, and once I picked her up, she did not let me go.”
Henderson claims the house was in disarray, and her other niece, a three-year-old, was battling for her life in the hospital.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the 3-year-old had a brain bleed and a severe skull fracture that required physicians to remove a portion of her skull. The two-year-old also suffered broken ribs, a broken wrist, bruises, and potential liver damage.
“From head to toe, it was bad,” Henderson added.
According to investigators, Jones contacted 911 and claimed that the 3-year-old had fallen off a bed. However, experts judged that the injuries were far too serious to be caused by a fall.
“One of the doctors said it was close to a child falling off a two-story building,” Henderson stated.
Jones eventually admitted to spanking the girls with a belt and ordering them to kneel with their hands behind their backs. According to court records, the 3-year-old had a pattern of bruising and scarring that resembled markings from a looped cable and possibly a belt buckle.
Detectives also discovered text exchanges in which Wilson reportedly told Jones what to say about who cared for the children.
People who lived in the household told KPRC 2 News that they rarely saw the girls and that they were frequently separated from others inside the house.
“These wounds were in various states of healing. So you’re telling me that no one knew what was going on with these kids? Henderson stated.
Children at Risk officials say warning indicators of abuse include isolation from others, rapid behavioral changes, and unexplained bruising or scarring.
KPRC 2 News spoke with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office about the eight-month delay in arresting Wilson and Jones. A representative described the complexities of such scenarios.
“These types of litigation are extremely lengthy and difficult. They demand detailed interviews, medical records from all proceedings, hospitalizations, doctor notes, and forensic interviews. Also, electronic evidence takes time to obtain, and then it is brought to the DA, who evaluates everything before accepting charges. “The Institute of Forensic Science, also known as CPS, is fully involved,” the spokeswoman stated.
The three-year-old now uses a feeding tube and a wheelchair. Despite their difficult path to recovery, Henderson reports that both children are in good spirits.
Henderson, who had not seen the kids in months before she was summoned, now has custody of both children.
She believes that their tale would encourage the community to remain vigilant and speak up.
“These wounds were in various states of healing. You’re telling me no one knew what was going on with these kids?” she asked.
