Former Chester highway superintendent sentenced to 17 years in prison for shooting lost DoorDash driver

A former Chestertown official has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for shooting a DoorDash driver in Orange County.

John Reilly III, 49, was sentenced in Orange County Court. He was convicted in March of assault and other offenses related to the event.

Authorities say Reilly was serving as Chester Town Highway Superintendent when he shot Alpha Barry, 28, last May.

Barry had gone to Reilly’s house after getting lost and losing his phone battery and asked whether he had placed an order. Reilly urged him to leave, and when Barry attempted to drive away, Reilly fired at his vehicle. Barry sustained significant injuries.

Barry’s attorney called the sentence “surprisingly high.”
