A Marion County judge sentenced a 19-year-old Avon man who accepted a plea deal for his role in a shooting at Castleton Square Mall two days before Christmas 2024.
Aaron McClure was sentenced to two years in prison and two years of probation after pleading guilty to intimidation.
Off-duty officers working security at the mall, located off East 82nd Street near Interstate 465, alerted police about 8:30 p.m. on December 23, 2024. The mall was evacuated promptly following the gunfire.
The shooting caused no injuries, according to initial reports. But about an hour later, McClure arrived at Eskenazi Hospital, just west of downtown Indianapolis, with an apparent gunshot wound. Police stated his condition as “stable.”
Detectives met with McClure in the hospital, who allegedly claimed he was shot by someone with whom he had previously had a conflict.
Then cops examined security footage from the mall, which showed McClure and another person pursuing the shooter. According to court filings, the detective stated that security footage showed McClure with his right hand holding a weapon in his pocket.
According to detectives, McClure and another suspect dashed out of view of the security footage. When McClure returned to the exit, the investigator said that security tape showed him hobbling and looking down at his left leg, indicating that he had been shot.
After leaving the hospital, an officer found McClure at a gas station and arrested him.
Investigators discovered damage from the shooting inside the mall, including a bullet hole in a wall and one in an arcade machine, and were reviewing CCTV footage from the mall as part of their investigation.
On December 30, 2024, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office stated: “The State does not intend to file any charges against the defendant at this time.”
On Jan. 8, 2025, IMPD North District announced McClure’s re-arrest for the mall shooting.Detectives discovered more evidence, including the identity of the alleged victim of the intimidation,” according to an IMPD release shared on social media.
Later that evening, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office charged McClure with felony intimidation.
According to IMPD, McClure was found in Avon on January 7, 2025, by the North District’s Violence Reduction Team and Violent Crimes Task Force. McClure was arrested for threatening with a deadly weapon.
