LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Family and friends launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical expenses for a teenager who was stabbed following Thunder Over Louisville on Saturday night.
15-year-old Dajon Hayes-Burr and his companions intervened to assist a 12-year-old girl facing sexual harassment. For Hayes-Burr, Saturday night began as a typical outing with friends at Thunder Over Louisville until the fireworks concluded. At that point, he heard a man—later identified by police as Vasilis Sakellaridis—making inappropriate comments to a young girl.
When the girl’s mother called out for help, Hayes-Burr and his nearby friends stepped in.
“Since I got a little sister, I wanted…if something happened to my little sister, I’d want somebody to help,” said Hayes-Burr.
During the confrontation, Sakellaridis stabbed Hayes-Burr in the stomach.
“I remember my friends picking me up and then one of my friends took my hoodie off of me, tied it around me,” said Hayes-Burr.
His friends immediately alerted police and paramedics, who transported him to the hospital. WAVE News interviewed the 12-year-old girl, Bristol Staisel, and her mother on Sunday. They expressed deep gratitude for Hayes-Burr’s actions, and Bristol shared a special way she wants to say thank you.
“I want to make him a bracelet, but I need to know his favorite color,” she said.
Police arrested Sakellaridis after finding him with a knife and homemade brass knuckles. He faces charges of assault, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and fleeing police.
Dajon’s aunt created a crowdsourcing campaign to support his family during his recuperation.
“Our family is deeply grateful that Da’Jon is still with us, but his road to recovery will be long and challenging. The emotional and physical toll of what happened is immense, and we want to do everything we can to support him as he heals,” reads the post. “The funds raised here will go directly toward Da’Jon’s recovery and to show our appreciation for his selfless act of heroism.”
