LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) — A man is in custody after his wife was fatally shot in the Shawnee neighborhood, according to Louisville Metro Police.

Officers responded to a shooting call around 4:16 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, in the 600 block of Southwestern Parkway.

At the scene, first responders found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

She was transported to UofL Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

A witness told police the victim was shot by her husband, 57-year-old Patrick Brents. The witness said the couple had been arguing about cleaning the house when Brents allegedly went into the bathroom and retrieved a gun from a drawer.

According to the witness, the victim told Brents not to shoot her, and he responded, “What are you going to do about it?” before the gun discharged.

Brents told police he retrieved the gun because he planned to leave the home, and said the weapon “went off,” striking the victim in the abdomen, according to his arrest citation.

He is charged with domestic violence and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, March 24.

LMPD’s Domestic Violence Unit is investigating the case.
