Motorists could soon see major changes to their commute between Louisville and southern Indiana.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Significant changes may be coming to the Clark Memorial Bridge that could affect how drivers travel between Louisville and southern Indiana.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, one proposal under consideration would reconfigure the bridge from four lanes to three. The plan would include two northbound lanes heading into Indiana and one southbound lane leading into Louisville.

A KYTC news release said the change could help reduce crashes and improve traffic flow by creating wider lanes. Officials said the proposal also focuses on maintaining the structural integrity of the 96-year-old bridge.

In a statement, KYTC said it has been planning steel maintenance repairs to remove the bridge’s recent weight restriction and saw an opportunity to combine those repairs with safety improvements rather than addressing the issues separately.

The agency said the concept also reflects feedback gathered from the community and local officials over the past several years about possible improvements to reduce crashes and improve traffic movement, including the lane configuration idea.

The project remains in the development stage, and engineers will continue evaluating the bridge’s condition while coordinating with local leaders.

No additional details about the project have been released.

Approximately 24,000 vehicles use the bridge each day, totaling about 8 million trips annually.

The Clark Memorial Bridge connects Louisville with Jeffersonville, Indiana.
