A student’s backpack set off a weapons detection system at Ballard High School, leading to the discovery of a gun.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Staff discovered a gun in a student’s backpack Thursday afternoon at Ballard High School.

The backpack triggered the school’s weapons detection system, and staff found the firearm during an inspection, Principal Dr. Jason Neuss said in a letter to parents.

The student fully cooperated with staff and followed all safety procedures. Officials said the gun was not used in a threatening manner.

“We are grateful for the effectiveness of our safety systems and the diligence of our staff. Please know that we take these matters very seriously and are committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.”

The student will face disciplinary action in line with the Student Support and Behavior Intervention Handbook.
