LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) — A juvenile male was taken to the hospital early Sunday morning after accidentally shooting himself, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.

Police said officers responded around 4:36 a.m. on Feb. 15 to a report of a shooting in the 1400 block of Standard Village Circle. When they arrived, they located a juvenile with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The victim was transported to UofL Hospital, where he was treated for injuries that appear to be non-life-threatening.

Investigators later determined the shooting was accidental and self-inflicted. LMPD’s Second Division is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The shooting comes just weeks after a 14-year-old boy died in a separate accidental self-inflicted shooting.

In response to that earlier tragedy, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office launched a countywide gun lock giveaway program on Feb. 13. The initiative encourages gun owners — particularly parents — to take advantage of free gun locks to help prevent similar incidents.
