Storage facilities in Louisville have come under scrutiny as more people report break-ins and stolen belongings.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — WDRB previously reported on tenants at a southwest Louisville storage facility who experienced break-ins, with some losing thousands of dollars. Since then, additional victims have contacted WDRB to share similar experiences.
Mikeala Armstrong rented a unit at Store Space Self Storage, located at 632 Mix Ave. in Louisville.
She discovered her unit had been broken into in November and moved out shortly afterward.
“No, nobody is even looking into it,” Armstrong said.
Armstrong filed a police report but said she still does not know when the break-in occurred or who was responsible.
“It took me like three days to get into my stuff after finding out that my stuff was broken into. When I opened it, stuff just fell out. They got into my stuff. I had keepsake items,” she said. “I felt violated seeing that.”
Armstrong said her bike and the tools she used for her business were also stolen.
According to Armstrong, police told her that storage units at the facility are frequently broken into.
After the break-in, on-site managers at Store Space Self Storage placed a new lock on her unit, replacing the one that was destroyed by thieves.
“They didn’t even tell me that they put a lock on my stuff. I feel, like hello. Communicate. Tell me that my stuff had been broken into,” she said.
When WDRB visited the property on Sunday, garage doors intended to secure units were left wide open. Glass sliding doors meant to protect other units were broken and not functioning.
“The keypad never worked,” Armstrong said.
Armstrong began renting the unit last March. She said access code pads and entry doors did not work until late September or early October.
WDRB contacted the company’s district manager, Kenny Carlough. He answered the call but said he could not speak with the media.
Armstrong shared several recorded calls with WDRB involving Carlough, the on-site manager, and customer service representatives.
In one recording, Carlough discussed the challenges of repairing the broken doors.
“I’ll give you some background,” he said on the call. “We got one bid, and it was $20,000 a door.”
In another call, Armstrong reported broken door issues to a customer service representative.
“It’s scheduled for repair, but I don’t have any update about when they’ll actually be able to come out and repair it,” the representative said.
The calls suggest the company was aware of security problems at the facility.
WDRB also sent a message to Store Space Self Storage through the contact form on the company’s website and is awaiting a response.
Carlough told WDRB he would try to connect them with someone from the company’s media relations team, but no further contact has been made.
WDRB also reached out to Louisville Metro Police to check on the status of Armstrong’s report. The station asked for data on how many break-ins occurred at the property this year and the total number of break-in calls last year, but police have not responded.
For Armstrong, the ongoing security issues combined with repeated break-ins raise serious concerns.
“That makes you want to raise an eyebrow,” Armstrong said. “Like, you know, are y’all purposely allowing this to happen?”
