LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A man was arrested after Louisville Metro Police say he stole a car at gunpoint when the owner left it running in a driveway. The incident highlights why law enforcement advises against leaving vehicles running during cold weather.

According to arrest citations, Stephfon L. Groves and a co-defendant noticed a car running in a driveway in the 4500 block of Accomack Drive.

Groves’ friend stayed behind and acted as a lookout while Groves walked toward the running vehicle with the intention of taking it. The homeowner then came outside and ran toward the car. Groves pulled a weapon on the owner and drove away, stopping shortly afterward to pick up his friend.

The two attempted to flee but lost control on icy roads, causing Groves to crash into another vehicle. Groves and his friend ran from the scene, with witnesses saying Groves handed his gun to his friend.

LMPD officers later located both men at a nearby Walmart. Police confirmed the gun had been reported stolen, and both suspects were taken into custody.

Groves now faces charges including robbery, criminal mischief, and receiving stolen property.

The arrest sheet for his co-defendant was not available at the time of reporting.
