KENTUCKY — Another unhoused person has died in Louisville as extreme winter weather continues across the region, city officials confirmed Wednesday.
Mayor Craig Greenberg said the individual was found dead overnight inside a tent off Bank Street. The death comes as temperatures dropped into the 20s, with wind chills falling as low as 10 degrees.
Greenberg said the person had been in contact Tuesday afternoon with the city’s HEART outreach team, which supports people experiencing homelessness. Outreach workers had also interacted with the individual multiple times over the past several months.
“This is just another reminder to the entire community that if there’s anyone in your life, whether you’re close to them or whether you are too far from them, but know of them, please reach out,” Greenberg said. “Please provide a helping hand and try to encourage people to seek help, to seek shelter and warmth during these challenging winter conditions that we’re going through right now.”
The person’s identity and the official cause of death have not been released.
City officials said more than a dozen people across Kentucky have died in connection with a major winter storm and prolonged extreme cold over the past week. Another unhoused man, Richard Marshall, was found dead shortly after the storm in Louisville’s Portland neighborhood.
Authorities continue to urge residents to check on vulnerable individuals and encourage the use of available shelters and warming resources as the cold weather persists.
