LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Flashing traffic lights are being removed from some intersections in downtown Louisville.

A few months ago, the city converted several intersections from traditional traffic signals to flashing red lights as part of a study to determine whether full signal removal was possible.

On Monday, crews removed the traffic lights at Seventh Street and West Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

The signals were replaced with large stop signs, officially turning the intersection into a two-way stop.

City officials said the decision followed a 90-day evaluation period at intersections connected to upcoming one-way to two-way street conversions. During that time, no crashes were reported, which leaders say shows the intersections can safely operate as multiway stops.

Flashing red lights that remain at Seventh and Chestnut streets, Eighth and Muhammad Ali Boulevard, and Eighth and West Liberty Street are also expected to be removed. The intersection at South Seventh and West Liberty is still under evaluation.

One-way to two-way street conversions for these intersections are scheduled to begin in late spring.
