LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Police Officer Nick Wilt, seriously injured while responding to the Old National Bank mass shooting in April 2023, was honored with a retirement ceremony Friday at the Summit Wellness Center.
Wilt, who was shot in the head by the gunman shortly after arriving on the scene, received a key to the city from Mayor Craig Greenberg. “We are so thankful for your service to our community, the courage you showed on that horrific day, and the determination you’ve shown every day since,” Greenberg said. “Your unbreakable spirit has inspired everyone in Louisville and beyond.”
LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey presented Wilt with his retirement credentials and a service award, while Assistant Chief Bryan Edelen told him, “Your place in our family does not end today. It does not require a badge or a uniform. You are family.”
Wilt had graduated from the police academy just 10 days before the shooting. The gunman, Connor Sturgeon, killed five people and injured several others, ambushing Wilt and his training officer, Cory “CJ” Galloway. Wilt spent nearly a month in critical condition and over two months in the ICU. He was released from rehabilitation in July 2023 and has continued recovery at home.
Mayor Greenberg called Wilt’s recovery “nothing short of a miracle.” His twin brother, Zack Wilt, said Nick starts every day with, “good morning, let’s conquer the day,” demonstrating his resilience. “He is an incredible human being, and we’re thankful the world gets to see that,” Zack said.
During the ceremony, Delta Dental offered Wilt free dental and vision insurance for life. Zack Wilt thanked the community for their ongoing support and encouragement throughout his brother’s recovery.
